After a weekend of much ephemera buying, this morning called for a clearout of the plan chest, and just look what I found nestled at the back of one of the drawers - a floppy disk!
I haven't seen a floppy disk in years and it made me smile. I remember using them with my first computer, an Apple Macintosh Classic. Frightening to think how little they actually hold, in fact the computer itself didn't hold much more - how did we manage??

"The term ‘ephemera’ covers a wide range of documents including leaflets, handbills, tickets, trade cards, programmes and playbills, printed tins and packaging, advertising inserts, posters, newspapers and much more". Collecting Ephemera is an addiction, it starts with the odd ticket, beermat or invitation and then before you know it you have boxes full of it. I know only too well that desire to find more, so imagine my delight in discovering not only is there an
Ephemera Society, but that it's having an '
Ephemera Society Fair' this very Sunday (15th) at the Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury!
The Society was established in 1975 for the conservation, study and presentation of printed and handwritten ephemera.
Annual membership is only £20 and members receive a quarterly newsletter, 'The Ephermist' and receive early entry into all the fairs and bazaars held throughout the year - bargain!

These fabulous matchbook covers are part of the
Flickr group, '
Mid Century Modern - Sticker, Label + Stamp', administered
Grain Edit. There are over 700 images in the group, mainly originating from Eastern Europe. The graphics are really simple and have a great print quality. They would definitely be a valuable addition to the Delicious reference box - I need to start a search!

Sculptor
Chris Gilmour creates these amazing life-size sculptures out of only cardboard and glue, that's it, no chicken mesh, no framework, just cardboard and glue! The detail is amazing and I love the idea of making crappy old packaging into art.

Our favourite photography gallery,
Arden & Anstruther are exhibiting the self-portraits of
Gilbert Garcin for the next six weeks, and are opening everyday throughout the
Petworth Festival (7-21 June). Garcin's images are wonderfully surreal and for me, there is something very Dada about them - I just love them. It is definitely worth a visit.

More wallpaper - it’s becoming an obsession!
Shi Yuan designed this heat-sensitive wallpaper as part of his, ‘Design with Life’ project. The project also includes a calendar, where the date disappears throughout the day – a great idea, but I’m not sure I could bear to see time literally vanishing before my eyes.

This is a fantastic project by Italian photographer,
Matteo Ferrari, called '
Automotive Monogamy'. He finds owners of classic cars who have had the same car for many years and recreates old photographs of them with their car when they first bought it.
Reminds me of a Flickr group, '
Me then, Me now' I read about a few weeks ago where people recreate a childhood photo of themselves. Very funny, and in some cases a little bit weird!
I have also come across a '
Then and now' group, where people recreate old photographs of towns and cities from the same angle and location.

We've been 'tagged' by
Make Do Style, so here are our 6 'design related' quirks in no particular order:
1. I only use type sizes in even numbers
2. I compulsively use dashes when I write
3. Double spacing after a full stop drives me crazy - it just looks so wrong!
4. I love opening a new book and smelling the fresh ink
5. I collect vintage photographs of cats (with or without their owners). I especially like the ones that have writing on the reverse - a shopping list, a letter or just a record of the date.
6. I can't help but copy check everything I read - even menus in restaurants, which by the way have some of the funniest typos
Well that's our 6 (actually the top 6 as we had many, many more) and in the spirit of 'tagging' and social networking we would like to tag our friends over at

How great is this site, devoted solely to the humble
Ampersand. There are some great 'found' ampersands on signage and some funny food Ampersands, but I'm not sure about the Ampersand tattoo's - that really is taking your love of typography to the extreme.

Sinon's Cat in Cat-Man-Do
Simon's Cat in Let me in!
We are loving these animations by Simon Tofield - they are so well observed, anyone with a cat will find them hilarious. We suspect that Simon's Cat is related to our very own Tigger as their characteristics seem shockingly similar!
Cat-Man-Do won 'Best Comedy' at the
British Animation Awards in March too, so congratulations Mr Tofield!

How cool is this? It's 'Ant'ique wallpaper', by Copenhagen based design studio,
GAMplusFRATESI and the winning project of 'New Walls, please! 2007', a design competition run by the
German Design Council and
a.s.Creation.
"Seen from distance the wallpaper seems simply an antique baroque motive, but coming closer you will discover that thousands of ants are crawling on the walls creating this baroque wallpaper..."Thanks Mike for the link!

The
V&A Museum of Childhood is running an Olympic Poster retrospective until 7 September 2008 to
"explore the fascinating representation of the Olympic Games through the intensely visual medium of the poster" and to coincide with the Beijing Games. It's a great opportunity to see these iconic designs in the flesh.
And for those of you who can't make it down to Bethnal Green there is a book,
'A Century of Olympic Posters' and some
reproductions of the original posters available online from the

Still on a car theme today and I came across
these (mainly Chinese) rip-offs of big car manufacturer's logos - Toyota seems to be a favourite!
They are from
Car Type, a great car website with loads of information about every car manufacturer you (well I) can think of, their history, logos and their advertising. Be warned though, an hour can easily be lost reading through all the info - but today I can get away with it, all in the name of research!
