Just saw this post on the
Sell Sell blog about illustrator
Gary Taxali. I love his work, it's fantastic - full of quirky characters and bright colours, and as Sell Sell say, it does have a look of vintage advertising/propaganda posters. Some of his signed, limited edition screenprints are available to buy
here.
And if this quirky, nostalgic illustration is your thing then check out the work of Polish, illustrator
Roman Klonek, whose woodcuts are similarly reminiscent of Eastern European propaganda posters, and also filled with wild and crazy looking characters in bright colours. The full collection of woodcuts can be seen on his
website (which is a pretty cool site), and if you want to see them in the flesh, there is normally a selection on display/for sale at
Castor & Pollux in Brighton.

Fubiz have put together a selection of '70 Amazing business cards' they find inspirational. Well, I'm not sure I would describe them all as amazing from a design point-of-view, but there are some really nice pieces of print so it's worth a little look.

'Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces' is exactly that, compiled into a neat little book by James West of
Create/Reject to raise money for
UNICEF's Myanmar (Burma) Cyclone Children's Appeal in the wake of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar on 2nd May 2008.
Contributors include some of the design world's elite; Farrow, Stefan Sagmeister, The Chase, North, Pentagram and The Designers Republic.
You can buy it from Koenig Books in Charing Cross Road, Artwords Bookshop in Shoreditch or
here. Cover price is £3, all of which goes to the charity, so for a bit of good Karma, why not sacrifice your latte & muffin on Monday morning and buy this book instead.

Another new item in the reference box (actually it's on the shelf, but it's still reference) is 'A Book of Lettering' published by A&C Black Ltd. in 1929. It's only 18 pages, but it has some great typefaces that were all hand drawn by Albert Field. Each typeface has with it a description and it's ideal usage, ie. for posters, embroidery, appliqúe, everyday use, woodwork, leather work, carving or printing.
The best thing about this book though, is that it had a couple of hidden extras folded away inside; a hand drawn map of the world showing exports and British colonies and a tea cosy design/pattern - how random!

How great is this site, devoted solely to the humble
Ampersand. There are some great 'found' ampersands on signage and some funny food Ampersands, but I'm not sure about the Ampersand tattoo's - that really is taking your love of typography to the extreme.

The
V&A Museum of Childhood is running an Olympic Poster retrospective until 7 September 2008 to
"explore the fascinating representation of the Olympic Games through the intensely visual medium of the poster" and to coincide with the Beijing Games. It's a great opportunity to see these iconic designs in the flesh.
And for those of you who can't make it down to Bethnal Green there is a book,
'A Century of Olympic Posters' and some
reproductions of the original posters available online from the
V&A shop.

Still on a car theme today and I came across
these (mainly Chinese) rip-offs of big car manufacturer's logos - Toyota seems to be a favourite!
They are from
Car Type, a great car website with loads of information about every car manufacturer you (well I) can think of, their history, logos and their advertising. Be warned though, an hour can easily be lost reading through all the info - but today I can get away with it, all in the name of research!

This was a carboot find a few years back and has been nestled in the reference box ever since. It's a 1961 Nebro Photographic Catalogue, mainly in black and white, but with a few colour pages. The product images and colour reproduction have a fantastic quality and there are some sweet little bits of type too.
There we have it #9 - 1961, Nebro Photographic Catalogue

You've got to love this - advertising in it's simplest form. Some kids in the local area started a car washing business last Summer and popped these on all the cars.

How great are these old Hoover Electric Washing Machine Instructions? We have a collection of vintage instruction cards and this is one of our favourites. The colour, the quality of the print and the detail of the illustrations are fantastic and for the amount of information on there, it is really well designed.

Remember our Ebay bargain, Trademarks & Symbols, Volume 2: Symbolical Designs by Yasaburo Kuwayama, well it arrived today and it is every bit as great as we expected. There are 1500+ marks from all over the world organised into themed sections - the pics above show pages from the Circles, Birds and Eye categories. It's a great piece of reference, so the search is now on for volume 1!
