Surf Photographer, Jeff Divine

Whilst we are on the theme of surf photographers, it would be remiss of me not too also post about the amazing work of Jeff Divine. Divine's images are mainly in colour and have a dynamic, fresh feel. His '70's Era' images are like a colour continuation of the Leroy Grannis black and white, 60's collection, capturing the whole of surf culture - the fashions, the hairstyles, the boards and always the very cool cars.

Jeff Divine grew up in La Jolla and began taking pictures of fellow surfers in the 60's. In 1971 he joined Surfer magazine and in 1981 became their Photo Editor for the next 16 years!

Divine's prints are available to buy through M+B in LA, but from the 21 July - 31 August his work will be exhibited/on sale at Crane and Kalman in Brighton, and I for one cannot wait!

Surf Photographer, Leroy Grannis

It's been a while since I last looked at the work of surfer and surf photographer, Leroy Grannis and it's never disappointing, especially 'The Legends: Classic 60's black and white photo collection'. They have that lovely grainy, vintage look and even in mono they radiate that warm, hazy days of summer feeling. As does the '60's legend board builders' collection which gives a great insight into the business end of 60's surf culture.

Grannis began surfing in 1931 and started photographing surfers and surf culture in the early 60's and has some great collections through the 60's and 70's in black and white and colour.

Limited edition photographic prints are available to buy here. Be warned though, they are not cheap and you will fall in love with them and just have to have one.

Illustrators, Gary Taxali & Roman Klonek

Just saw this post on the Sell Sell blog about illustrator Gary Taxali. I love his work, it's fantastic - full of quirky characters and bright colours, and as Sell Sell say, it does have a look of vintage advertising/propaganda posters. Some of his signed, limited edition screenprints are available to buy here.

And if this quirky, nostalgic illustration is your thing then check out the work of Polish, illustrator Roman Klonek, whose woodcuts are similarly reminiscent of Eastern European propaganda posters, and also filled with wild and crazy looking characters in bright colours. The full collection of woodcuts can be seen on his website (which is a pretty cool site), and if you want to see them in the flesh, there is normally a selection on display/for sale at Castor & Pollux in Brighton.

Any Jesus £4

"Any Jesus £4 each" is not something you see everyday so I thought it worthy of a post. Thanks to Darren at Site for sending us this gem of a pic. As seen in Snoopers Paradise, Brighton.

Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces

'Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces' is exactly that, compiled into a neat little book by James West of Create/Reject to raise money for UNICEF's Myanmar (Burma) Cyclone Children's Appeal in the wake of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar on 2nd May 2008.

Contributors include some of the design world's elite; Farrow, Stefan Sagmeister, The Chase, North, Pentagram and The Designers Republic.

You can buy it from Koenig Books in Charing Cross Road, Artwords Bookshop in Shoreditch or here. Cover price is £3, all of which goes to the charity, so for a bit of good Karma, why not sacrifice your latte & muffin on Monday morning and buy this book instead.

Now you see it…

More wallpaper - it’s becoming an obsession! Shi Yuan designed this heat-sensitive wallpaper as part of his, ‘Design with Life’ project. The project also includes a calendar, where the date disappears throughout the day – a great idea, but I’m not sure I could bear to see time literally vanishing before my eyes.

ANT'IQUE WALLPAPER

How cool is this? It's 'Ant'ique wallpaper', by Copenhagen based design studio, GAMplusFRATESI and the winning project of 'New Walls, please! 2007', a design competition run by the German Design Council and a.s.Creation.

"Seen from distance the wallpaper seems simply an antique baroque motive, but coming closer you will discover that thousands of ants are crawling on the walls creating this baroque wallpaper..."

Thanks Mike for the link!

The Magnificent Chatwin Brothers

I came across these great, hand-printed wallpapers today and just want to buy rolls and rolls of them. They're based on old Navy tattoos and were created by the Magnificent Chatwin Brothers. Both designs are 3 colour prints; ‘Swallows’ (pink, petrol blue & white), ‘Skulls’ (black, white & pink) and are available from Beyond the Valley for £140 per 10 x 0.5m roll.

Visions of America at Crane Kalman

If you do pop down to the coast for the Brighton Festival make sure you visit photography gallery, Crane Kalman situated in the heart of the lanes. Throughout May until the 8 June they are running, ‘Visions of America’ an exhibition showcasing work from Jeff Liao and Christoph Morlinghaus.

I love the contrast of these two collections shown together, Liao’s images are very raw and colourful, whereas Morlinghaus captures a nostalgic faded glory in his black and white images, as shown above in ‘Great White 2, 2007’. Take a look, you won’t be disappointed.

Artizan Editions at Castor + Pollux

Brighton Gallery, Castor + Pollux are hosting a great exhibition, ‘Artizan Editions: A printmaking retrospective’ as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe 3 – 26 May. The exhibition is a retrospective of the publishers and proponents of original art in print - Artizan Editions.

We were lucky enough to have a sneak preview at the weekend and it really is a great collection of work from printmaking greats like Bridget Riley and Brian Rice . Plus it’s right on the beach – what more could you want?

The Trademarks & Symbols have arrived!

Remember our Ebay bargain, Trademarks & Symbols, Volume 2: Symbolical Designs by Yasaburo Kuwayama, well it arrived today and it is every bit as great as we expected. There are 1500+ marks from all over the world organised into themed sections - the pics above show pages from the Circles, Birds and Eye categories. It's a great piece of reference, so the search is now on for volume 1!

The Santa Monica, 'Pacific Wheel'

This is probably the best item that is ever going to be in our 'Things to buy' category - it's the 'Pacific Wheel', the famous Santa Monica Ferris Wheel, which is now on ebay.

The wheel debuted in May 1966 at the opening of Pacific Park and in 1998 became the world's first solar-powered ferris wheel. It's a great item for those with a giant garden and a lot of spare cash (Bidding is currently at $50,000), but it says in the details that the wheel base is not included in the sale!! What is a buyer going to do with a 90ft high ferris wheel with no base?
