From the reference box #29

These have been in the reference box for quite a while - a collection of vintage Christmas cards from 1960 onwards.

I bought them from a boot sale all taped into a scrapbook. There a quite a few more, but these are the best ones. My favourite is the robin, which I think was some kind of charity card designed by a child called, Marian.

The amount of detail is fantastic - many of them have foil blocking, glitter or embossing and are folded in an unusual way with print also on the inner.

24 Delicious Days of Advent - #17

A gorgeous number 17 - Girard Alphabet Blocks by House Industries.

Fun and functional, brightly coloured alphabet blocks created by House Industries in collaboration with the estate of the late designer, Alexander Girard.

The 28 wooden blocks are made from replenishable, kiln-dried basswood and printed with non-toxic, child friendly inks. The blocks feature "alphabets based on the forthcoming Alexander Girard font collection and a cleverly-adapted House Industries factory logo puzzle".

A great gift for children or adults alike and available here.

Sweet 16 - the fabulous Vivienne Westwood Opus! A "startling insight into Vivienne Westwood, her manifesto and her stunning designs, which reflect the passion of her collections".

It's an amazingly luxurious 90 x 64cm, 200 page publication, filled with 97 giant (80 x 64cm) polaroids of her unique designs and each one is hand-signed by Dame Vivienne Westwood herself.

There are only 900 copies available worldwide in nine cover designs (100 copies per design). The most expensive of these covers - the Union Jack (£2100) has already sold out, but the remaining editions can still be bought here for £1400.

15 is an old favourite - an original 1958, linen-backed Vertigo poster.

This rare, 41 x 81" format poster for Hitchcock's 'Vertigo', is my favourite Saul Bass movie poster. At the Movies have one available for £8000, along with an original 27 x 41" format version for £5000 and a modern reproduction for a more palatable £19.99!

Another late post (but it is the weekend). Number 14 - Set of 6 Miniature Chairs: Design Interior Collection Vol 4.

These gorgeous, miniature designer chairs are 1:12 scale models. This set of 6 includes design classics such as Le Corbusier's LC4 Chaise Longue, the LC2 Grand Confort sofa, the Bocca sofa by Studio 65, George Nelson's Marshmallow Sofa, the Ball Chair by Eero Aarnio and a pair of Ladder Chairs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

I found this set in the Design Museum Shop for £85.

Number 13 is a wonderful book, Signs & Emblems by Erhardt Steibner and Dieter Urban, published in 1984.

I have only ever seen it on blogs and Flickr groups, but it looks like a great source of inspiration. There's just something nice about a book full of mono graphics and symbols.

I have found a few copies of this one for sale here and here, but none are what I would call cheap, but I bet it's worth every penny.

Half way there - number 12! My favourite Shepard Fairey print, Guns and Roses, 2006.

Very few places have this print for sale now, but one is available for sale or trade here. The annoying thing is, when I first saw this print I could have owned it for £50 but decided not to buy it!!!!

A rather late in the day, number 11 - Hero Mystery Gift Boxes

Mystery Gift Boxes from Hero Design Studio & Boutique. Even the packaging is fabulous! Each box is hand-printed and filled with 5 blind box toys and a one-of-a-kind 5" x 7" Hero test print.

It's a great idea for a fun Christmas Gift and a bargain at only $25 when the actual value of contents is $45!

Anthony Burrill Prints

I just came across these great Anthony Burrill prints over at Concrete Hermit. They are a set of 4, A3 digital prints unlike his usual letterpressed versions, but are much more affordable as a gift at £40 for the set.

If however, you would prefer to get your hands on a letterpressed version, Soma Gallery are taking orders for the latest edition of 'Work hard & be nice to people', expected in-store any day now.

No.10 is a classic from photographer Hugh Holland - 'Jesus Saves', Marina Del Ray, 1977 from his Angels series.

Angels - Street. Skate. Seventies. is a collection of images that documents the early skateboarding scene in the mid 70's before it's commercial explosion.

In the UK prints are available from Crane Kalman, Brighton and in the US, from M+B, California.

Tina Lilienthal
's wonderfully chunky and kitsch jewellery is at no.9.

Her collection combines skull, strawberry, heart, pearl, anchor and scissor details which create fun, quirky pieces; pins, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. I love them all (but Santa, if you are reading this, the cherries are my favourite!)

In Brighton, the wonderful Jewel Thief has a good selection of the range along with a great selection of other contemporary jewellery.

A beautiful and glamorous number 8 - Tim Walker's, 'Pictures' book.

After seeing his exhibition at The Design Museum earlier this year I have yearned after this book. His images are so dreamy and pretty and at the same time a little weird which I just love.

The book is not only a collection of his gorgeous images but an insight into the way Walker works; his reference, sketches, thoughts and ideas.

There are some copies (old and new) on Amazon from about £40 which is not a bad price for such a lovely book. Some of his images are available as posters here.

This book is probably on every designers Christmas wishlist (unless of course they're lucky enough to already own it!).

It's 'Herb Lubalin; Art Director, Graphic Designer and typographer', a retrospective of his lifes work, crammed full of his wonderful typography, Avant Garde spreads and iconic logos.

I have found a few copies for sale but they're not cheap! A bit more affordable though, is the Japanese, Idea Magazine #329 with a special feature on the 'Typo-Graphics of Herb Lubalin'. Understandably it's a sought after issue, but it covers a large amount of Herb's renowned typography and design and is only 39.50 Euro (thanks to Ryan at Sell! Sell! for this great tip-off).

There's also a great tribute to Herb Lubalin's work online here.
