Alphabet Trucks & Abandoned Gasoline Stations

I spend half my time driving checking out the type and graphics on passing trucks, some of which have fantastic typography. Eric Tabuchi though, has taken this to a whole new level, compiling a truck alphabet as a limited edition collection of postcards.

He has also created a limited edition set of 26 Abandoned Gasoline Station postcards. Without the fuel pumps etc... you can really appreciate the architecture of the buildings, even though they look a bit out of place in the landscape.

Both editions are limited to 500 and available here.

Visual Aid

Visual Aid: Stuff You've Forgotten, Things You Never Thought You Knew and Lessons You Didn't Quite Get Around to Learning.

I'm a big fan of information graphics and I love all those books full of facts and information you'll never ever need to know, so when I came across this book the other day I was thrilled.

It's packed full of simple and colorful charts, diagrams and illustrations; "Visual Aid provides the answers to the little questions in life in a simple colourful and engaging way. This eclectic collection of illustrations and diagrams will get you up to speed on life's basics".

Learning about science is great, but this book also gives information about the more important things in life, like how to make popular cocktails and how to make shadow animals - now we're talking...

Design Magazine

Design was launched in 1949 by the Council of Industrial Design (later to become the Design Council); a body set up in 1944 by the British Government to, “to promote by all practicable means the improvement of design in the products of British industry”. Published monthly and distributed Internationally, Design soon became highly influential.

I picked up 4 copies in a local secondhand store just before Christmas; September & November '73 and February & July '75. The covers aren't great for these issues, but the content is fantastic.

The adverts ooze Seventies style. They are mainly for office furniture, but I found a couple of Letraset ones which made me smile - I like what they did with the 8/g. I miss Letraset!

There are loads of really interesting articles which I'll scan and post soon, but as a taster here's one from the February 1975 issue discussing Coca-Cola and the, "fantastic momentum of the coke image" and how it, "outpowers its fizzy raison d'êtrê". (Click on the images to read the full article).

By far the funniest ads I found in these publications were the classifieds - not sexist or ageist at all - oh how times have changed!

Aesthetic Apparatus at Richard Goodhall Gallery

Hello and welcome back, hope you all had a great holiday!

While I was up North over the holiday season, I took the opportunity to drop in to the Richard Goodhall Gallery in Manchester. They always have a superb selection of gig posters, limited editions prints and photography and it's become a bit of a tradition to treat myself to one.

This year they had some really great Aesthetic Apparatus prints on display from their Doomdrips series. They're bright and bold - perfect to get me motivated for the New Year. I bought the fist one (above centre) for only £25! Can't wait to get it framed and on the wall.

Happy New Year!!

Just a quick post to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2009! Back to work Monday - now, where's that drink?

24 Delicious Days of Advent #24

Yeah! Merry Christmas - we've finally reached number 24 and in true advent style this is a big one...

A Mercedes 300SL or a 'Gull Wing' as it's often known. A stunningly beautiful car with bags of style and top of my car wishlist.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG as a fuel-injected, road version of their highly successful 1952 competition sports car, the 300SL was introduced at the New York Auto Show, 1954 as a two-seater sports coupe with characteristic gull-wing doors.

Please Santa if you're reading this, it truly would make a fantastic Christmas gift!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

24 Delicious Days of Advent - #23

Number 23 - only one day to go - and so to the penultimate item in my Delicious Days of Advent list. The TTi USB turntable with Ipod dock!

I suspect these have been around for a while, but I've only recently come across them. A USB turntable with an Ipod dock, making it possible to download vinyl directly to your PC or onto your Ipod!!

What a great idea, and it's only £138.99! I'm sold on this already!

24 Delicious Days of Advent - #22

Number 22 - The amazing ABC3D pop-up book by Marion Bataille.

I think this one is probably on every designer and typographers Christmas list (unless they have it already!) but it's far too wonderful to leave out.

I first posted about this book back in March when a mock-up version was demonstrated in a short video on Youtube. The finished book was released in October this year and is every bit as great as I imagined.

At the minute it's only £6.49 on Amazon (although there is also one listed for £110.60!! - surely that must be a typo?). It would be a great addition to any coffee table - so grab yourselves a bargain.

24 Delicious Days of Advent - #21

Only 3 days of advent to go! Number 21 is a pair of CYRK posters.

CYRK posters are Polish circus/art posters created during the golden era of the Polish School of Posters (post World War II-1989). They "achieved a remarkable artistic quality as well as an unmatched degree of popularity".

These are 2 of my favourite ones, designed by Hubert Hilscher (1924 - 1999). There are some original ones for sale here and here.

24 Delicious Days of Advent - #20

Another book for number 20. Norman Parkinson Portraits in Fashion by Robert Muir.

I absolutely adore Norman Parkinson's photography and this book includes all my favourite images. It's arranged decade by decade and illustrated with fashion plates, portraits and contact sheets, some of which had never been seen before the book was published.

The hardback edition is available to buy here and fine art prints are available here. But if you want to see some of his work in the flesh, our favourite photography gallery, Arden & Anstruther in Petworth, UK have some Norman Parkinson photographs in their private collection and they normally have at least one on display.

A nostalgic number 19 - Catalog: The Illustrated History of Mail-Order Shopping by Robin Cherry.

I love old catalogues - the models, the clothes, the poses and the photos, they're so kitsch and fun. This book is a collection of ads and pages from American mail-order catalogues like L.L.Bean and Sears, organised into categories like clothing, food, animals etc... It traces a timeline through American history of fashions and trends through the products available in the catalogues.

Catalog is available to buy in the UK from here and here and in the US from here. A definite on my Christmas list!

FoneGloo Infomercial from Sell! Sell!

Just saw this over at Sell! Sell! - it's their excellent new infomercial for FoneGloo:

"FoneGloo is the latest innovation in mobile phone retention - a sticky gloop that will stick your mobile to your face so that you don't lose it on one of those boozy nights out."

No.18 is The Giant Golden Book of Biology: An introduction to the Science of Life, illustrated by the wonderful Charley Harper in 1961.

I have only ever seen this book on design blogs, but the illustrations and colours look fantastic. These images are from Grain Edits Flickr group which has loads of great pics from the book.

I would love to own it! Copies do come up on Ebay quite often and there are always some for sale here, but at prices from $599 it's a serious purchase, so I'm still hoping to find a copy at a boot sale!
