Is It Okay To Talk About The Olympics Branding Now?

There's a great post over on Sell! Sell! looking back at the London 2012 Olympic branding as a kind of de-brief and I have to say I agree with them whole heartedly. (And yes, this is a lame excuse to post Lance Wyman's wonderful Mexico'68 Olympic branding - but it's always nice to see it!)

Kraków Poster Gallery

Czwarta Pani AndersonAndrzej Krajewski, 1973

Ryan over at Sell! Sell! sent me a great link yesterday to the Galeria Plakatu Kraków (Kraków Poster Gallery). I've always been a fan of Polish circus posters (CYRK) especially the Hubert Hilscher ones and was asking Ryan if he had seen any on his recent visit to Kraków.

The gallery is apparently very small, but stacked to the rafters with film, theatre, political, music and circus posters from the 50's right up to the late 80's - the golden era of the Polish School of Posters, "the Polish Government financially supported and encouraged poster art. Posters became the primary art form of the nation. The art of Polish posters attained international fame, becoming established as the best in contemporary/vintage poster art".

CYRK (koń)Jan Młodożeniec, 1972

CYRK (kot-tygrys), Hubert Hilscher, 1980
Niewinni Czarodzieje, Wojciech Fangor, 1960

Babie LatoJacek Neugebauer, 1974

Luckily for those of us not visiting Poland in the near future, they have an equally fully stocked online shop with very reasonable prices. Above are a selection of my favourites.

Help Save The Dover Bookshop

The Dover Bookshop needs our help! Every designer I know has used a Dover book at some point and their amazingly resourceful books grace the shelves of many a swanky design studio, yet they're in trouble and need the support of the design community to keep going.

For those who aren't familiar with The Dover Bookshop, shame on you! Long before you could drag reference images off the internet, The Dover Bookshop was a wealth of copyright and permission-free imagery and a huge source of inspiration.

They've been selling their range of pictorial archive books in Covent Garden for 25 years, but are struggling to survive the recession. Please buy even just one book from here to help keep this wonderful institution around for another 25 years!

Vintage Racing Posters

It's all about the posters today! This little bunch are my personal favourites from Historic Car Art's massive selection of original, vintage racing posters.

The bold colours and simple designs do it for me, now if only I had more wall space...

Zodiac Posters

Remember these beauties we posted about a while back - 1969 Zodiac posters by Gerry and Joe Simboli?

Well Pedlars have Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio, Libra and Virgo available in their sale with 50% off! Such great posters, I'm very tempted.

Designed to Win

To coincide with the 2012 Olympics, the Design Museum in association with Oakley have curated, Designed to Win, an exhibition showcasing outstanding design & innovation in sport and celebrating "the ways in which design and sport are combined, pushing the limits of human endeavour to achieve records and victories of increasing significance and wonder"

It looks at the relationship between design and sport; how design has progressed some sport, how sport has influenced design and how this relationship has led to winning performances.

The exhibition opened today and runs until 18 November 2012 so there's plenty of time to get down there and see it (for your own sanity though, it's probably best to wait until the Olympic circus has left town).

From the reference box #128

#128 - Vintage bulb packaging. I just saw that the lovely Maraid was selling some vintage bulb packaging on Ebay (can't believe I missed them!), anyway it reminded me that I had a few somewhere and here they are.

A DR. G. Fischer Autolicht car bulb for a Helphos spotlight (left), a British Electric Lamps Ltd. decorative bulb and a neon crucifix light bulb. Maybe I'll start collecting these too!

Auto Type XXII

Auto Type XXII - Always a petrol heads dream, Goodwood Festival of Speed didn't disappoint again this year. Although there's a high percentage of new stuff, there's still plenty of oldies. Here's a selection... enjoy!

You can see our full collection of Auto Type here and if classic cars get your blood pumping, check out our sister blog Super Ninety for some beauties.

#127 - Post Office Telegram, 14 November 1946. I picked this up at a car boot sale last summer. The envelope is only slightly bigger than a business card and made from extremely thin paper (as is the telegram).

I bought it because the simplicity of the type on the envelope attracted my attention- clear and functional, with no hint at the message inside. In this case a happy one ' [to] Brown 9 Watsons Walk St-Albans= Congratulations on your 21 st birthday love= Jean D+'.

If you like this, check out more of our reference material here.

#126 - Disque de controle do stationnement (a vintage French parking control). Another dial for my collection, and a variation of one I already have. The only difference is that this one advertises 'Vittel' water, and my other is advertises Citreon cars.

Have a look at my other dials here, or have a look through our ever-growing reference box here.

Neon sale

The wonderful Fishtail Neon in Brighton have some wonderful used neon and fairground signage for sale at the moment. Most of which is signed by artist and shop owner Andy Doig.

There are some larger examples for sale, fairground crosses and a fabulous giant letter N, but I thought these little stars would look great in any home/ studio.

I would recommend a visit to their shop in person if you ever get the chance, otherwise you can keep up-to-date with their goings on here and take a look at all their signs for sale here.

#126 - BASF playing time calculator. Another dial for the collection, this one's for determining the minimum tape (remember them?) spool size from the length of playing time and length of tape in feet.

For me it's really all about the BASF logo on that lovely red circle!

See more of our wheel and dial collection here or have a root through the rest of our reference box here.
