AT Openhouse

We've been pedaling our wares again this month at the wonderful AT Open House as part of the Artists Open Houses alongside a fantastic line-up of artists, designers and makers.

As you can see there's work from a few AT regulars; Mark Pavey (Dead Methods), illustrator Alice Pattulo, screen-printing duo hellododo, Pinch of Petting Zoo Prints & Collectables, glitter-loving James Sawyer, realist painter Rhys Trusseler and illustrator/rude word purveyor Nathan James Page. Along with some great work from some new additions to the AT family; perspex jewellery extraordinaires Designosaur, kitsch toy lover Toy Pincher, whimsical painter Becky Blair, contemparary jewellery designer An Alleweireldt (Oxx Jewellery), illustrator Ceri Amphlett, abstrat painter Sophie Abbott and Teresa Stewart Goodman with her quirky animal character cut-outs.

This weekend is the last weekend to see all this work in one place and of course treat yourselves to the delicious cake, so get yourselves down to AT Open House before the doors close for another year.

AT Open House is open 11-6pm, Saturday & Sunday at 42 Hendon Street, Brighton BN2 0EG.

New Linocut prints

So here they are, our new set of A3 fairground and circus inspired linocut prints.

Each print is an edition of 100 and will be stamped and numbered. They're going to be for sale as part of the Best Home collective at Pick Me Up later this month and also at AT Openhouse as part of the Brighton Festival's, Artists' Open Houses throughout May. Once the shows are over the remaining prints will be available from Art-O-mart, our online store.

Spring Shows

Busy times at Delicious HQ lettering, lino-cutting and printing for our new range of circus and fairground inspired prints, totes and silk scarves ready for our Spring shows.

We're very excited to be doing Pick Me Up for the first time this year, as part of the 'Best Home' collective, the brain child of the lovely Niki Best, "print and graphic arts are all around us, and not just on our walls. We want to show the variety and number of different applications by getting various artists working in mediums that they havent worked in before". Best Home will be bursting with exclusive wallpaper & fabric, ceramics, paper cuts, prints, totes, notebooks and greetings cards from Antony Burrill, Lubna Chowdhary, James Marshall ( Dalek), Danny Sangra, Alex Binnie, Lou Taylor, Curly Mark, INSA, Stewart Easton, Home Slice and Stanley James Press. Best artists will also be running workshops throughout the show including paper-cutting, letterpress, embroidery and printmaking. Pick Me Up 2014 starts on the 24 April and runs until 5 May at Somerset House, London. Check our their website for more information and to book early bird tickets.

In May we'll also be back at AT Openhouse alongside an impressive line-up of artist, designers and printmakers; Alice Pattullo, An Alleweireldt, Becky Blair, Dead Methods, designosaur, hello DODO, Inkyskipper, James Sawyer, Mr Wingate, Nathan James Page, Petting Zoo Prints & Collectables, Sophie Abbott, Teresa Stewart-Goodman, Toypincher and Winsome & Saucy. Of course there'll also be lots of tea, coffee and cake! Artists' Open Houses are open weekends throughout May as part of the Brighton Festival. For more information and to keep up-to-date with artists and plans, check out the AT website.

I'll post up some taster pics over the next month as the new range comes together, so watch this space.

Swann Galleries, New York are holding a 'Rare & Important Travel Poster' auction on October 18th. They always have an impressive selection of posters in their auctions and this one is no exception.

"From the deserts of the Mideast to the alpine resorts of Europe, this auction offers images of diverse geographical locations, in addition to bold depictions of trains, ocean liners and airplanes."

For me it doesn't matter about rarety, importance or designer. It's the bold, bright, graphic ones I like, however I will need significantly deeper pockets to be bidding on any of these.

See the full catalogue here.

Abstract City Maps

I do like a map and these abstract city maps by Jazzberry Blue are no exception with their blocks of colour and graphic shapes they're definitely ticking all the right boxes.

It's really interesting to see the street plans in such a simple form. I love how crazy and random the London streets are compared to the others and the New York one is grid heaven.

Jazzberry Blue have a great body of illustration work, including more maps for New Delhi, LA and Jerusalem all available as Giclee art prints here.

Bembo's Zoo

I just saw this lovely little ABC book over on Brain Pickings. It was designed by Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich and published in 2000 so it's been around a while but it's typographic illustrations have definitely stood the test of time.

Roberto wanted an ABC book he could use to teach his daughter both English and Portugese so it needed animal names that started with the same letter in each language. After an unsuccessful search he created his own version, Bembo's Zoo using the typeface Bembo as a basis for all the typographic illustrations...

You can see more of Roberto's beautiful typography here.

Quad Royal Daphne Padden Screen Prints

These lovely Daphne Padden collages; Gardener (above left) and London (above right) are now available as screen prints on Ebay courtesy of Quad Royal.

When Daphne died in 2009 these unused collages were discovered in her studio and with the permission of her estate have been turned into screen prints by Quad Royal.

"Daphne Padden was one of the best designers of her generation. Working from the late 1950s until the 1970s, at the same time as artists such as Tom Eckersley and Abram Games, her work is only now being recognised. She created not only posters - for British Railways, Tillings Coaches and commercial companies - but also packaging for companies like Lux and Marks & Spencers. Her trademark style combines simplicity with a touch of humour typical of the mid-century."

Girlynomics now on Kindle

Girlynomics: The Downturn Alley Edition by Kate Battrick (Make Do Style) is now available on Kindle for a bargain price of £1.02.

"Harness the power of Girlynomics to set your budget, balance your personal income and live within your means. In these hard times this book is the perfect answer to help you live your life without having to keep left over bits of lemon in the freezer! Girlynomics will give you new insight in how to make your student loan, weekly wage or salary last for year, month or week".

We're biased as we did the cover & chapter titles (above) for Kate, but it's a great book, a real wealth of information, resources and ideas to help make a girl's finances stretch that bit further. The perfect read for those cold, dark February evenings!

London Underground 150 year anniversary stamps

On the 9 January 1863 London Underground, the World's first underground transport system, opened and the first underground train took passengers on a 3.5 mile ride from Paddington to Farringdon.

To celebrate this 150 year milestone Royal Mail have released a set of 6 commemorative stamps (above) that illustrate the tube's timeline with lithographs, illustrations and photographs. They also give a nod to the design of the iconic tube map.

However, it's these miniature stamps each showing 3 classic London Underground advertising posters that I found the most interesting/inspiring...
